NAME AND LOCATION OF YOUR UNIT Mantra, Kottakarai. BACKGROUND, OR SOME INFO ON YOUR TRAINING, AND WHEN YOU JOINED AUROVILLE I first came here
and met the Mother in 1971. I returned after graduation with the idea of doing
something creative and discovered Golden Bridge Pottery in Pondicherry, where I
apprenticed for three and a half years, after which I moved to Auroville in
1979. WHEN DID YOUR UNIT START? Mantra, which is
the third unit I am involved in, started in 1995. WHAT WAS THE MAIN
INSPIRATION BEHIND Mother. SOME MILESTONES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF YOUR UNIT? Every day is a
milestone. SOME DESCRIPTION
OF THE NATURE OF YOUR PRODUCT. We make wood-fired
high-temp stoneware.
With this process we mainly make functional tableware and some tiles. Now we
have also started making low temp decorative tiles, and lustre tiles as well. We
have incorporated carpentry into our process and make objects such as coasters
and mirror frames with the tiles. THROUGH YOUR
ACTIVITY, WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO SEEK, OR EXPRESS? Fine and just
working conditions and self respect and joy in work for the employees. I see
them as partners, and want them to integrate as Aurovilians if they wish, as
time goes by. We also like to contribute cash and pots to Auroville.
