On this year's World Environment Day, Wednesday June 5th, the opening of the new Kuyilapallayam School Trust's sub-school in Bommaiyarpalayam took place and it was a special day. At 6 in the morning we started with a ceremonial pooja and at 9 the first children and teachers came to open the school. The two teachers were already part of the KST mother-school in Kuyilapallayam and for these first days already some 20 children had applied to come to the school.
Sense of opennessThere is a sense of openness in the new building, where air, space and beauty seem to be nicely integrated with the environment. The view is on the Bay of Bengal and a fresh breeze comes from the sea. Now that the first phase of the school is completed, we have three classrooms -two for kindergarten and one for the first grade- with separate toilets for girls and boys, a borewell, watertank and a storeroom.
Playground under the treesThe heart of this second school campus is the 'old Mango tope', where a platform for communal activities will be constructed. The old trees radiate a special atmosphere, and we also planted 'Terminalia catappa', called Badam tree by the Tamil population. Its different layers will give a nice shade in the future, and the children can collect its almond-like fruits. Improving Auroville's environmentIn the future we intend to create here a complete primary school with two kindergarten classes and six grades. We wish and hope that this KST sub-school, as its mother-school in Kuyilapallayam, will help to improve Auroville's 'environment' in ever so many ways.
