City Study Circle

On the 11th of May 14 people met to continue the discussion on 'mobility'.

Some questions:

• is it possible to do without individual vehicles in a city of 50.000?

• if the urban fabric is conceived for only pedestrians, cyclists and collective transport, what will be its characteristics?

• under what circumstances will individual vehicles be necessary?

• Mobility revolves around the relationship between housing, work, services, public life, recreation etc. How are these to be integrated? And how do different structures effect mobility?

One effort of the Study Circle is to try and work out a methodology that allows us to understand various scenarios for planning. It is necessary to become aware of the far reaching consequences of development. Mobility demands special case studies since it determines in a general way both the social and physical environment of a city.

For the moment we are looking at the implications of a city with no individual motorised transport, certainly since this also touches upon the concept of the 'sustainable city'.
