Agricultural research

Agricultural experiments in Auroville are a synthesis of many different methods, such as Biodynamics, Permaculture, Earth Bodies, Effective MicroOrganisms, Vermiculture, etc, and of progressive technologies for more conscientious water and energy use in irrigation, involving windmills, solar panels, rainwater harvesting, drip and sprinkler systems.

Ongoing studies include:

  • Mixed systems farming and agro-ecosystems
  • Green manures and the use of intercropping in agriculture
  • Promoting natural biodiversity and creation of microclimates
  • Agroforestry and use of minor forest produce
  • Collection and selection of seeds of traditional varieties
  • Water harvesting and management
  • Use of organic pest control
  • Fruit orchard management
  • Animal husbandry
  • Solar & wind power and conservative irrigation
  • Designing energy saving tools for tillage and mulch farming
  • Ecological accounting
  • Food Security.

There are various research & training facilities for students in sustainable agriculture and agro-ecology, and for visitors who want to learn while doing farm work in Auroville. Applicants should plan to stay a minimum of one month, and make reservations in advance, particularly between the busy months of December - March (note: April-June is the hottest time, while September-December can be very wet). You can contact the Farm Group with your request, giving some indication of your previous experience and particular interests.
